Meet President Jon Blankenship

Jon joined the Rotary Club of Birmingham in 2001.  He is a graduate of the University of Virginia. He received his Master’s Degree in Psychology from George Mason University and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in San Diego. He also completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard. In 1981, he began working as a management psychologist, consulting to businesses and organizations. He co-founded Blankenship & Seay Consulting Group in 1989, with Buddy Seay, a fellow Rotarian, and the firm now also includes fellow Rotarian Duncan Hulsey.

Jon’s areas of expertise include pre-employment selection and assessment, leadership development and succession planning, executive coaching, career assessment, and culture and attitude surveying. He is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Society of Consulting Psychology. He is a co-author of the book entitled Managing Stress Before It Manages You.

Jon and his wife, Dalton, have lived and worked in Birmingham since 1981.  They have two sons, one daughter, and four grandchildren. Through the years, Jon has been active in a number of community organizations. In addition to his service through the Rotary Club of Birmingham, he has served on the boards of the Birmingham Chapter of the American Red Cross, Birmingham Crisis Center, the Lakeshore Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Alabama Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the University of Alabama School of Nursing and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.

Jon is a woodworker and a sailor, both on Lake Martin and in the Caribbean. His interest in travel started in college. In fact, he was an accomplished hitchhiker who once “hitched” from Yosemite Park to Eugene, Oregon, and from Charlottesville, Virginia to Washington, D.C., making that trip in less time than he was able to drive it.  His professional and personal travels have taken him to Israel, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, India, China, and Africa, and many other destinations.

Next Week:  Betsy DeVos - Submit Your Questions By July 9th

Be sure to join us via Zoom again next week (15th) as we welcome the U.S. Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos.   Secretary DeVos wants to spend most of her time addressing your questions, so please submit your questions by clicking here by July 9th.

For the July 15th Zoom meeting, box lunches will again be available for curbside pick-up.  Please email betts@birminghamrotary.org  to make your reservations for lunch pickup no later than Wednesday, July 8th for the July 15th pickup.   The menu will include braised pork roast and several side items. If you need gluten free or a vegan option, please let us know.

COVID-19 UPDATE

Please know that the Board of Directors is continuously monitoring our local circumstances related to COVID-19 and regularly consulting with public health experts to determine when and how we can resume in-person meetings.  As you likely know, cases have spiked again, and caution is warranted.  We will meet virtually on July 8th and 15th, and reevaluate each week after that to determine our plans.  We’re pleased to offer curbside pickup of meals each week, and very excited about the lineup of speakers for the coming year.  We know that this is a time when service above self is needed more than ever, and we will continue to find ways for the Club to be of service to the community during this time.

Our Club Foundation recently made a contribution, alongside other clubs in our district, to repair a much-needed forklift at the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama.  Elizabeth Wix, Director of Partnerships at the Food Bank, writes, “Thank you so much! We are just blown away by the tremendous response from all the Rotary Clubs.”  You can read the Over The Mountain Journal’s full article about this gift at https://www.otmj.com/rotary-clubs-central-alabama-food-bank/.  Your contributions made this important and timely repair possible!
